kolar, formerly known kolahala, kuvalala , kolala, called kolahalapura during middle ages. in kannada, kolahahapura means violent city , battlefield warring chalukyas in north , cholas in south. in 1004 ad, cholas annexed kolar until 1116. vishnuvardhana (1108-1142) freed gangavadi cholas and, commemorate victory, built chennakesava temple @ belur.

in 1117 kolar became part of hoysala empire; in 1254 bestowed ramanatha, 1 of king someshwara s 2 sons. hoysala defeated vijayanagara empire, ruled kolar 1336 1664. during period, sri someshwara temple @ kolar built.


for 50 years in 17th century kolar under maratha rule part of jagir of shahaji, followed 70 years of muslim rule. in 1720 became part of province of sira, fateh mohammed (the father of hyder ali) province s faujdar. kolar ruled marathas, nawab of cuddapah, nizam of hyderabad , hyder ali. under british rule 1768 1770 before brief maratha rule followed hyder ali. in 1791 lord cornwallis conquered kolar , returned kingdom of mysore in peace treaty of 1792.


in kolar region, inscriptions document reigns of mahavalis (baanaas), pallavas , vaidumbaas. benjamin lewis rice recorded 1,347 inscriptions in kolar district, in 10th volume of epigraphia carnatica. of inscriptions, 422 in tamil, 211 in telugu , remainder in kannada.
