the school founded in 1866 , takes name princess alexandra of denmark, school s patron. school colours, red , white, adopted danish flag in honour. alexandra college founded anne jellicoe, quaker educationist, in name of furthering women s education. under anne jellicoe, school grew small establishment focused on providing governess-style education irish protestant ladies pioneering force women s rights , education, providing education women equivalent available in boys schools, grounding in mathematics, history, classics , philosophy. alexandra settled role, anne jellicoe convinced major obstacle liberal education of women exclusion university campus. passionately believed until women admitted trinity college dublin (founded in 1592), voice of women not commonly heard in politics, literature or in academic debate.


the royal university of ireland act 1879 allowed females take university degrees on same basis males. students prepared examinations (including degree examinations) of royal university. susan parkes, co-author of gladly learn , gladly teach, history of alexandra college (1866-1966), quoted saying: in late 1800s, lecturers trinity college dublin provided tuition ladies on alexandra campus. , first women receive degrees in ireland or britain alex pupils — 6 of them studied @ dublin s royal university 1891 , @ trinity college dublin, once opened doors women in 1903.


the school situated in historic earlsfort terrace, across national concert hall. 1879, new hall , theatre constructed alongside. on time, school acquired several more houses , 1889 new building william kaye-parry constructed next door college alexandra school. school moved out sports grounds in 1960s in order accommodate more students. original buildings subsequently demolished , site remained vacant on 2 decades. conrad hotel , office buildings later erected on site.


the patriot , leading figure in easter 1916 uprising patrick pearse once employed irish language teacher. first ever international hockey match held on alexandra college hockey pitch. england vs ireland, , ireland won 1-0.
