Metrobus Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority



metrobus fleet consists of 1,505 buses covering area of 1,500 square miles (3,900 km²) in washington, d.c., maryland, , virginia. there more 300 bus routes serving 12,216 stops, including 2,398 bus shelters. in fiscal year 2009, metrobus provided more 133 million trips. metrobus had 130.8 million trips in fy2015. on typical weekday, provides more 400,000 trips.


metro has awarded five-year contract nabi (now new flyer) procurement of 654 new buses. first batch of 85 nabi diesel-electric hybrid 42-foot buses on order, delivery expected within year. new buses replace of metro’s older orion v, neoplan an460a , new flyer c40lf buses, delivered in 1997-2002. going forward, contract gives metro option order 498 additional 42-foot buses , 71 60-foot buses on five-year period. red/silver painted buses used on local routes , blue/silver buses used on metroextra routes. these buses have either red stripe in front of bus local routes or blue stripe in front of bus metroextra routes easy identification. numbering represents region of operation. differ regions numbering system, maryland letter (prefix) route number , virginia letter (suffix) route number. example: c22 (maryland) & 15l (virginia).
