throughout bristol s history avon gorge has been important transport route, carrying river avon, major roads , 2 railways. bristol channel , avon estuary have high tidal range of 15 metres (49 ft), second bay of fundy in eastern canada; , gorge relatively narrow , meandering, making notoriously difficult navigate. several vessels have grounded in gorge including ss demerara after launch in 1851, schooner gipsy in 1878, steam tug black eagle in 1861 , llandaff city.


in 1877 halfpenny bridge, pedestrian toll bridge, crossing river bath spa railway station widcombe collapsed loss of 10 lives amongst large crowd going bath , west agricultural show.


the avon has flooded several times in recorded history. these floods include 1 in 1799/1800 damaging pulteney bridge. various points along river including valley around freshford @ risk of fluvial flooding, result of sediment entering river , narrowing channel. cope areas on banks of river designated functional floodplain cope increased flow volumes. potential changes weather patterns result of climate change suggest further measures needed protect population flooding risk. tidal surge, combined high water levels flooding of surrounding area caused flooding in city of bristol.
