no. 257 squadron formed @ dundee on 18 august 1918 nos. 318 , 319 flights. flew both seaplanes , flying boats on anti-submarine patrols dundee until end of first world war , disbanded there on 30 june 1919.

the squadron re-formed on 17 may 1940 @ raf hendon fighter squadron, equipped spitfires. squadron became operational @ raf northolt, squadron flew hurricanes in battle of britain, during part of no. 11 group raf. squadron based in south-east england throughout battle of britain , in march began taking part in sweeps on france. night fighter patrols flown , in july 1942 converted typhoons began low-level patrols in september intercept enemy fighter-bomber raids. escort missions flown , in july 1943, began offensive operations. squadron started fighter-bombing sorties in january 1944, , part of second tactical air force moved france in july provide air support allied armies. october based in belgium attacks on enemy transport , battlefield targets. squadron disbanded on 5 march 1945.

post war
on 1 september 1946 squadron re-formed @ raf church fenton fighter squadron, flying gloster meteors until january 1955. converted hawker hunters. on 31 march 1957 squadron disbanded third time.

the squadron re-emerged on 1 july 1960 @ raf warboys air defence unit using bristol bloodhound missiles till 31 december 1963, when squadron disbanded fourth time.
