the roman ruins of tarraco have been designated world heritage site unesco.


part of bases of large cyclopean walls near cuartel de pilatos thought pre-date romans. building mentioned, prison in 19th century, said have been palace of augustus. second century tarragona amphitheatre near seashore extensively used quarry after fall of western roman empire, , few vestiges of remain. circus c. 450 metres (1,480 ft) long, built on in area called plaça de la font, though portions of still traced. throughout town latin, , apparently phoenician, inscriptions on stones of houses mark material used buildings in town.


two ancient monuments, @ little distance town, have, however, fared rather better. first of these les ferreres aqueduct, spans valley 4 kilometres (2 miles) north of city. 217 m (712 ft) in length, , loftiest arches, of there 2 tiers, 26 m (85 ft) high. there monument 6 km (4 mi) along coast road east of city, commonly called tower of scipios ; there no authority assuming buried here.
