the collaboration become cromemco began in 1970 when harry garland , roger melen, graduate students @ stanford university, began working on series of articles popular electronics magazine. these articles described construction projects electronic hobbyist. since difficult hobbyist find needed parts these projects, garland , melen licensed third-party suppliers provide kits of parts. kit 1 of these projects, “op amp tester”, sold company called mits later launch revolutionary microcomputer on cover of popular electronics.


in 1974 roger melen visiting new york editorial offices of popular electronics saw prototype of mits altair microcomputer. melen impressed machine changed return flight california go through albuquerque, met ed roberts, president of mits. @ meeting roberts encouraged melen develop add-on products altair, beginning cyclops digital camera slated appear in february 1975 issue of popular electronics.


on returning california, melen , garland formed partnership produce cyclops camera , future microcomputer products. named company “cromemco” after stanford dorm (crothers memorial hall) first began collaboration.
