durga puja rituals

the festival of durga puja starts mahalaya, first phase of waxing moon in aswin. thousands offer prayers ancestors @ city s river banks or sacred ponds, ritual called tarpana. inauguration of goddess idol starts on mahashasthi. main puja 3 days - mahasaptami, mahaastami, mahanavami. puja rituals long , detailed , complicated. 3 days of mantras , shlokas , arati , offerings - needs expert priest kind of puja. because of this, number of pujas privately conducted families has lessened , durga puja has emerged community festival.


mahashashthi

on day goddess durga arrives mortal world heavenly abode, accompanied children. welcomed fanfare amidst beat of traditional drums. unveiling face of idol main ritual on day. bela baran or kalaparambha, ritual performed before commencement of puja, precedes chakshyu daan, amantran , adhibas.


mahasaptami

saptami first day of durga puja. tiny banana plant, or navapatrika, given pre-dawn bath. ancient ritual of worshiping 9 types of plants. worshiped symbol of goddess. main saptami puja follows kalparambha , mahasnan.


mahaastami

the day begins recital of sanskrit hymns, in community puja pandals, thousands of devotees offer anjali goddess. kumari puja, or worship of little girls child goddess, special part of rituals observed in number of traditional , household pujas. day continues, time important sandhi puja, marks inter-linking of maha ashtami , maha navami. in recent times pani-kakharu (white pumpkin) sacrifice replaced animal sacrifice in various parts of state. oriya women of western odisha , adjoining chhattisgarh celebrate bhaijiutia on mahastami day of durga puja. total fast undertaken women whole day , night seek goddess durga s blessing long life of bhais (brothers).


mahanavami

this concluding day of durga puja. main navami puja begins after end of sandhi puja. navami bhog consisting fish offered goddess. later partaken of prasad devotees. in day of navami oriya households organise navami bhoji (navami feast) , invite friends, relatives. in day prepare typical oriya delicasies (both vegetarian , non-vegetarian items).


vijaya dashami or dussehra

after 3 days of puja, in dashami, on last day, after last ritual aparajita puja offered goddess, tearful farewell offered her. women offer dahi-pakhal (cooked rice soaked in water , curd), pitha (baked cake), mitha (sweets) , fish fry goddess. of community pujas prolong farewell long possible, , arrange grand send-off. images carried in processions known bhasani jatra or bisarjan jatra around locality , immersed in nearby river or lake. vijoya dashami event celebrated on india. after immersion of idol, people across state celebrate ravan podi (they burn huge idol of demon ravana)
