private schools

tollington park college, private educational establishment boys, founded william brown in 1879 in tollington park, london n4. rapid population growth around muswell hill created need new school. founder s son campbell brown established tollington boys school in tetherdown, muswell hill in 1901. brown opened tollington high school girls in nearby collingwood avenue in 1910. in 1919 both schools purchased local education authority. aside senior management, 2 schools operated independently.


grammar schools

after world war ii, became state grammar school , attached preparatory school became tetherdown primary school (this moved site in 1958 when exchanged premises girls grammar school). in 1958 current building erected , tollington high school girls , tollington grammar school boys merged become tollington grammar school (co-ed). in 1950s, william grimshaw secondary modern school (named after local councillor) opened on adjoining site in creighton avenue.


creighton comprehensive school

with introduction of comprehensive education in haringey in 1967, tollington grammar school , william grimshaw secondary modern school merged form creighton school on creighton avenue. charles loades, head of william grimshaw since 1958, became head, remaining until retirement in 1974.


in 1970s, creighton school became centrepiece of labour party educational experiment. situated in middle-class largely white suburb of muswell hill decided integrate large number of afro-caribbean , other ethnic minority children school distant parts of borough in attempt maximise education choice , social interaction - policy based heavily on united states system of desegregation busing. in 1975, before new intake had worked through school, around one-third of sixth form either first-generation immigrant, or had surname of cypriot or asian origin. head charged overseeing experiment molly hattersley, wife of labour party minister roy hattersley.


as part of continuing debate comprehensive schools, creighton school became subject of series of articles in sunday times , subsequent book hunter davies,the creighton report, illustrated a-level photography student @ school.

after further reorganisation, creighton school , comprehensive, alexandra park school, combined under new name of fortismere school. opened in september 1983 , gained technology college status in 1997, lasted until became foundation school.


foundation status

in summer of 2006, school s governors , appointed head teacher aydin Önaç proposed change school s status of foundation school. governors argued increased autonomy lea foundation status provided beneficial school, while critics argued proposal attack on school s comprehensive nature , lead reduction in provision pupils special educational needs. on 1 september 2007, fortismere became foundation school - despite opposition 70 per cent of parents , 100s of students, of whom later caricatured Önaç adolf hitler.


in september 2009, Önaç altered comprehensive school s entry criteria, reserving places musically gifted children - policy described elitist , favouring wealthier parents , more academic children.


Önaç criticised a policy towards children special needs. ten children affected policy, reduced personnel in had been well-staffed special needs department, , breached legal requirements concerning hours of support provided children. parents sought judicial review of Önaç s approach special needs provision, in december 2009 resigned post after legal action started. action subsequently discontinued , special needs provision improved after Önaç s departure.


vertical tutoring , colleges

under leadership of headteacher helen glass, fortismere adopted vertical tutoring system in september 2012. under new system students assorted tutor groups consist of students years 7-11. school introduced college system. following online vote, decided new colleges named after wonders of world. there 6 colleges : alexandria, ephesus, colosseum, rhodes, olympia , petra.
