his sudden wealth allowed him build large mansion in madison; completed in 1844. wife elizabeth died in 1846 , remarried margaret mary mcclure in 1848.
in 1849, began trading railroad shares in new york in bank started there in same year richard winslow called winslow, lanier & co.. in 1851, moved out of state new york, manage new business. never moved indiana.
at request of gov. oliver p. morton, lanier loaned indiana government on 1 million dollars without security state avoid bankruptcy during american civil war. money used pay interest on state debt , outfit troops. repaid 1870. state, grateful help, has preserved residence in madison, lanier mansion, state historic site.
