in wsc s debut season of 1977–78, chappell hit first supertest century , finished fifth in overall averages. prevalence of short-pitched fast bowling , serious injury australian david hookes led innovation of batting helmets; chappell 1 of many batsmen use one. following 1975–76 tour of australia, west indies adopted four-man fast bowling attack, while world xi contained fast bowlers of calibre of imran khan, mike procter, garth le roux, clive rice , sarfraz nawaz. constant diet of pace bowling undermined confidence of batsmen during wsc. chappell s form fell away during second season , scored 181 runs @ 25.85 in 4 supertests. during last 6 days of season, wsc australians lost finals of both limited-overs competition (to west indies xi) , supertest series (to world xi), forfeiting winner-takes-all prize money. after latter match, chappell vented frustrations on world xi captain tony greig refusing shake hand , criticising greig s inconsequential contribution team s victory. final act of competition series between wsc australians , wsc west indies played in caribbean in spring of 1979. after australians suffered heavy defeat in first supertest @ jamaica, chappell rallied team draw 5 match series one-all. best effort scores of 61 , 86 @ barbados.

convinced return official cricket when wsc ended, chappell resumed captain of sa in 1979–80, decision later regretted. season far increasingly irascible chappell. reported umpire swearing in match against tasmania, received three-week suspension. in first match after ban, again reported conduct in game against touring english team. given suspended ban acb, selected australia s last 3 tests of season. test career finished scores of 75 , 26 not out @ mcg against england in february 1980. in final first-class match, sa needed beat victoria win sheffield shield. although chappell scored 112, sa lost match , shield. ironically, umpires voted him competition s player of season second time.


odi record

chappell s aggressive approach suited limited-overs cricket: scored runs @ strike-rate of 77 runs per hundred balls. timing of career limited him 16 odi matches, appeared in number of historic fixtures such first odi (at mcg in 1971), first world cup final (at lord s in 1975) , first day/night match (during wsc, @ vfl park in 1978). passed fifty in half of innings top score of 86 @ christchurch in 1973–74. in final season of international cricket, scored 63 not out (from 65 balls) against west indies @ scg win player of match award; 5 days later hit unbeaten 60 50 balls in penultimate odi appearance, against england. captain, recorded 6 wins , 5 losses 11 matches. credited have hit first ever 6 in odi match (which in fact first odi match ever played).

legacy

the title of abc s documentary chappell era, broadcast in 2002, encapsulated chappell s significance australian cricket. subtitled cricket in 70s, chronicled rise of australian cricket team under chappell, fight better pay players, , professionalisation of game through wsc. during program, chappell reiterated criticisms of cricket s administration @ time.


in wisden, richie benaud wrote, chappell remembered bid improve players lot run-getting , captaincy . during wsc period, founded players association loan provided kerry packer. despite chappell s continued support organisation after retirement, apathy , lack of recognition acb led demise in 1988. revived in 1997 australian cricketers association (aca), important organisation within structure of australian cricket. in 2005, chappell became member of aca executive.


chappell inducted sport australia hall of fame in 1986, fica cricket hall of fame in 2000 , australian cricket hall of fame in 2003. 2 new grandstands @ adelaide oval named chappell stands; @ dedication ceremony in 2003, saca president ian mclachlan called chappells, famous cricketing family in south australia . in 2004, chappell family again honoured creation of chappell–hadlee trophy, annual series of odi matches played between australia , new zealand.
