the glacier area 1 of main tourist attractions of west coast, around 250,000 visitors year, , 2,700 per day (2007). guided , unguided walks , onto glacier possible. however, since april 2012 glacier walks require helicopter flight past unstable terminal face. glacier walks require specialised equipment, namely ice axes , crampons latch onto sturdy boot. these provided tour companies.


as walking part of tour glacier takes long time, , ends @ first icefall (a frozen waterfall, draping natural step in land underneath), many tourists book helicopter tours 1 of several local airlines, drop guests between first , second icefalls, guided 1–2 hour walk through broken ground atop glacier. although glacial landscape changes daily, given glacier s unusually fast flow, , walks including passages through ice tunnels, still considered quite safe , strenuous.

in june 2010, australian tourist died of heart attack during guided hike of glacier.


at entrance of valley lies village of franz josef, has permanent population of approximately 330 residents. situated 5 km glacier on state highway 6 , has petrol station, small busy heliport, numerous tourist accommodation options (with 2,000 people staying overnight during main season) , number of restaurants , shops. south of village, sealed road leads highway franz josef glacier valley , car park. several small walks start valley road , car park, , possible comfortably cycle franz josef township car park.

as of 2015, valley walk ends @ lookout 50 m main terminal face of glacier. since around 2012 terminal face has become dangerous approach, , signs warn against crossing safety barriers @ lookout. alternative option view glacier via 8 hour day hike 1,303 metres (4,275 ft) high alex knob, overlooking franz josef glacier , valley below. path alex knob of tramping track standard, strenuous due steeply climbing 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) in height , considered advanced due duration of hike.
