st. bernard parish has celebrated mardi gras parades in chalmette. in february 2006, krewe of knights of nemesis held parade, past many buildings still in ruins, along streets of chalmette.


as of 2008, many businesses have returned area, schools have reopened, although population remains below pre-katrina levels.


due hurricane katrina, st. bernard parish school board succeeded in getting school open despite considerable difficulties, including telling fema not wait agency. parish opened st. bernard unified school k-12 school in late 2005.


with opening of 2006-2007 school year, unified school reverted chalmette high school , houses grades 9-12. former andrew jackson high school has been repaired , houses grades 6-8. trist middle school houses grades 6 through 8.


the catholic , private school sector lost katrina. archdiocese of new orleans has consolidated local schools one, on our lady of prompt succor campus. has grades pk-8.
