Collision Spektr

damaged solar arrays on spektr module following collision unmanned progress spacecraft in september 1997. in space rendezvous gone wrong, progress collided mir, beginning depressurizing halted closing hatch spektr

on june 25, 1997, progress m-34 spacecraft crashed spektr while doing experimental docking maneuver kvant-1 module. collision damaged 1 of spektr s solar arrays , punctured hull, causing relatively slow leak. crew had enough time install hatch cover , seal module off prevent depressurization of entire mir station. seal module, crew had remove cables routed through (open) hatchway, including power cables spektr s solar panels.

an internal spacewalk in spektr module in august 1997 cosmonauts anatoly solovyov , pavel vinogradov, soyuz tm-26, succeeded in restoring these power connections installing modified hatch cover allow power cables pass through hatch when in closed position. in second internal spacewalk in october connected 2 of panels computer system allow panels controlled remotely , align sun. these modifications allowed power generation return approximately 70% of pre-collision generation capability.

spektr left depressurized , isolated remainder of mir complex.
