limbu 26 years old, , lance corporal in 2nd battalion, 10th princess mary s own gurkha rifles, british army during indonesian confrontation when, on 21 november 1965 in sarawak, borneo, lance corporal rambahadur limbu in advance party of 16 gurkhas when encountered 30 indonesians holding position on top of jungle-covered hill. lance-corporal went forward 2 men, when 10 yards enemy machine-gun position, sentry opened fire on them, whereupon limbu rushed forward , killed him grenade. remaining enemy combatants opened fire on small party, wounding 2 men lance-corporal who, under heavy fire, made 3 journeys open, 2 drag comrades safety , 1 retrieve bren gun, charged down , killed many of enemy.

on 21st november 1965 in bau district of sarawak lance corporal rambahadur limbu company when discovered , attacked strong enemy force located in border area... leading support group in van of attack see nearest trench , in sentry manning machine gun. determined gain first blood inched himself forward until... seen , sentry opened fire, wounding man right. rushing forward reached enemy trench... , killed sentry, thereby gaining attacking force foothold on objective... complete disregard hail of fire got , led fire group better fire position...


...he saw both men of own group wounded... and... commenced... rescue comrades... crawled forward, in full view of @ least 2 enemy machine gun posts concentrated fire on him... but... driven accurate , intense... fire... after pause started again...


rushing forward hurled himself on ground beside 1 of wounded , calling support 2 light machine guns... picked man , carried him safety... without hesitation returned... [for other] wounded man [and] carried him back... through hail of enemy bullets. had taken twenty minutes complete gallant action , events leading it. few seconds non-commissioned officer had been moving alone in full view of enemy , under continuous aimed fire of automatic weapons... outstanding personal bravery, selfless conduct, complete contempt of enemy , determination save lives of men of fire group set incomparable example , inspired saw him.


finally, lance corporal rambahadur responsible killing 4 more enemy attempted escape...


he displayed heroism, self sacrifice , devotion duty , men of highest order. actions on day reached zenith of determined, premeditated valour must count amongst notable on record , deserving of greatest admiration , highest praise.



later career

his original victoria cross stolen, along other possessions, while asleep during train journey in india native nepal in 1967. has never been found, , issued replacement.


he reached rank of captain, queen s gurkha officer (qgo), , appointed member of royal victorian order (mvo) in 1984 service queen s gurkha orderly officer.
