in 2005, wtc instituted ironman 70.3 race series. shorter course, known half ironman, consists of 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, , 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run. ironman series, consists of number of qualifying races @ various locations worldwide, culminating in world championship race athletes drawn largely top finishers in qualifying events.


for amateur athletes, 70.3 events acted qualifiers full ironman world championships in hawaii. however, 2015 qualifying year marked large de-emphasis on using selected ironman 70.3 series races avenue amateur athletes qualify ironman world championships. change made accommodate increased number of qualifying slots created newly added full ironman events.


for professional triathletes, 3 70.3 events can used accumulate points put towards championship qualifying point rankings.
