penumbra: overture based on frictional games earlier game penumbra, short tech demo meant demonstrate capabilities of company s hpl engine 1.


the developers admitted making significant modifications of original engine accommodate 3d graphics in game, engine built engine created when making thesis job resulted in platform game energetic. before moving 3rd dimension made cleanup of engine (which quite rushed in places) , started add base 3d rendering. not original 2d engine modified add 3d, rather 3d layer added of 2d stuff still there. still possible make 2d tile game using our engine.


while not intended commercial product, penumbra received exceedingly well, , frictional decided develop full-length game.

the first episode of penumbra released on 30 march 2007, through various online distribution websites. game simultaneously released in boxed edition in united kingdom, , boxed release in united states shipped retailers on 8 may 2007. on 25 may 2007, full version linux released on frictional games store.


in addition, game became available on gametap on 4 october 2007. on 10 january 2008, full version mac os x released on frictional games forum powerpc , intel architectures. on 6 march 2009, paradox interactive released penumbra overture in collection pack along penumbra: black plague , penumbra: requiem. game became available via steam on 7 march 2009.


overture released part of humble indie bundle, , when bundle made more $1 million, overture s source code released open source. frictional games hosts dedicated forum on website people can discuss code , projects based around it.
