Campaign and results Western Australian colonial election, 1894
only 15 out of 33 seats contested @ election, although represented increase of 4 1890 election. 5 of 6 seats in perth , fremantle contested, exception being south fremantle, elias solomon returned unopposed. in perth, major campaign issue education – in particular, whether catholic schools should funded state. 2 extraparliamentary organisations established on either side of debate, education defence league (led thomas molloy , timothy quinlan) in favour , national education league (led george randell) opposed. both leagues endorsed candidates in 3 perth electorates, 3 pro-catholic candidates being defeated. in north fremantle, 1 of candidates, george baker, endorsed progressive political league (ppl), political arm of trades , labour council (and forerunner of labor party). other ppl members had been unable meet property qualifications necessary stand.
