new street station main railway station in city centre local , national railway connections. station first built in 1854 , rebuilt in 1967. redevelopment of station in project named gateway plus finished in 2016.the project cost £600m , includes new john lewis department store , many other shops. project took 5 years build , 1 expensive , controversial regenerations in of europe. moor street, snow hill, bordersley , jewellery station located within city centre. ten suburban , inter-city heavy rail routes service city centre. first railway station built in city centre curzon street railway station, acted terminus both london , birmingham railway , grand junction railway, lines connecting birmingham london , manchester , liverpool respectively. building, designed philip hardwick, built in 1838 , grade listed.


the midland metro system, opened in 1999, terminates @ grand central , has stops @ bull street, st chads, st paul s , jewellery quarter. line 1 being extended centenary square, , on 5 ways in future. in 2007, construction of new viaduct carry metro line on great charles street queensway commenced. viaduct built developers of snowhill, adjacent snow hill station. birmingham city centre used have trolleybus system in 19th century , early-20th century extended towards suburbs.


the trolleybus system replaced motor buses , city centre hub bus system in city. buses terminate @ bull street, corporation street , moor street, queensway. majority of these buses operated national express west midlands. city centre hub national coach network. digbeth coach station, in process of being prepared redevelopment, owned , operated national express move headquarters city. built midland red in 1929, , until 1997 used midland red west depot. shed rear of coach station has been demolished , spencer house, office building above main waiting room, has been boarded up. planning application refurbishment of building has been submitted , awaiting planning permission. temporary coach station on opposite side of road being used.


cars not officially encouraged in city centre. areas have been pedestrianised prevent cars interfering pedestrian traffic, , roundabouts pedestrian subway systems have been replaced signal-controlled junctions, e.g. on smallbrook queensway, moor st queensway, james watt queensway , st chad s circus near st chad s cathedral. however, there still remnants of birmingham inner ring road (queensway) in existence despite demolition , downgrading, de facto heavily trafficked half-ring vehicular underpasses through traffic on st chads queensway, great charles st queensway , suffolk st queensway. at-grade pedestrian crossings go on these roads, remain subways or bridges. half-ring arguably reduce traffic in other parts of city centre, however.


there numerous multi-storey car parks located within city centre, owned private companies. new multi-storey car park proposed @ rear of millennium point whilst demolition of multi-storey car park on dale end has been granted permission city council part of martineau galleries redevelopment birmingham alliance.
