the author , publisher prosecuted under regime of second empire outrage aux bonnes mœurs ( insult public decency ). consequence of prosecution, baudelaire fined 300 francs. 6 poems work suppressed , ban on publication not lifted in france until 1949. these poems lesbos ; femmes damnées (À la pâle clarté) (or women doomed (in pale glimmer...) ); le léthé (or lethe ); À celle qui est trop gaie (or joyful ); les bijoux (or jewels ); , les métamorphoses du vampire (or vampire s metamorphoses ). these later published in brussels in small volume entitled les Épaves (scraps or jetsam).
on other hand, upon reading swan (or le cygne ) les fleurs du mal, victor hugo announced baudelaire had created un nouveau frisson (a new shudder, new thrill) in literature.
in wake of prosecution, second edition issued in 1861 added 35 new poems, removed 6 suppressed poems, , added new section entitled tableaux parisiens.
a posthumous third edition, preface théophile gautier , including 14 unpublished poems, issued in 1868.
