biography
early years

trevino son of ricardo trevino, sr., tejano musician, , linda chavez. music career began when started taking piano lessons @ age of five. plays rhythm guitar keyboards.

trevino graduated westwood high school in austin, texas. although offered baseball scholarship memphis state university, trevino chose instead study music @ texas a&m university. while student, played brand of country music in local clubs. in december 1991, representative of sony label, paul jarosik, stranded in austin due flooding conditions , visited small club trevino regularly played. although trevino not performing evening, representative saw several articles on walls praised trevino. employees of club gave him tape of trevino s music, label representative passed onto music producer steve buckingham. buckingham made special trip austin hear trevino perform , signed him sony. trevino left school pursue music career.

1993: dos mundos

at insistence of columbia nashville, first album, dos mundos entirely spanish country album. trevino, not native spanish speaker , needed lessons before record album, displeased decision. didn t bit because didn t want people think tejano artist...everybody thinks m tejano singer crossing on country format. album certified gold (selling on 500,000 copies) .

1993-1995: rick trevino

seven months later, in 1994, sony released first english album, rick trevino. rick trevino certified gold (selling on 500,000 copies) , featured 2 number 1 hits, can t didn t cry , doctor time. released debut single, enough rope ( bastante cordón ) on september 7, 1993. appeared in english on rick trevino , in spanish on dos mundos, while version of song combined 2 languages released radio. became first mainstream country single released in both english , spanish. album s third single, can t didn t cry , became trevino s first chart-topper, spending 1 week @ top of gavin report country singles charts.

1995-1996: looking light

the follow-up english album, looking light, released in 1995 , included top-ten hit bobbie ann mason. trevino recorded spanish version of album, titled un rayo de luz ( ray of light ).

in late 1990s joined all-star group of mexican-american singers, including members of los lobos, freddy fender, ruben ramos, , flaco jimenez, create supergoup los super seven. group won grammy in 1998 best mexican-american music performance self-titled debut album. 2 albums followed - canto in 2001 (also released live on dvd) , heard on x in 2005 (both albums included raul malo of mavericks among others).

1996-1997: learning go

trevino s 1996 album learning go, produced first , billboard number 1 single in running out of reasons run learning go reaching #1 on radio & records chart , #2 on billboard country chart. third single, way reached #7 on billboard country chart. looking light, learning go featured separate spanish-language version, titled mi vida eres tú ( life ).

1998: departure sony

trevino asked leave contract sony in hopes of moving in different musical direction. sony refused release him contract, , trevino cut new album , released single lonely me on august 18, 1998. before album released, sony agreed release trevino, , album shelved. same year trevino appeared on compilation cd tribute tradition (released on columbia label) cover version of city lights (#1 country classic recorded ray price in 1958).

1999-2002: continued touring , mi son

undaunted, trevino continued tour , released spanish-language album, mi son, contained ballads , had little hint of country music roots. without new album or record deal, however, trevino s touring schedule slowed, , of band quit.

during time trevino began collaborating raul malo, former frontman of country band mavericks. 2 had met while working on second los super 7 album. collaborations helped bring trevino attention of producer paul worley, helped trevino contract warner brothers.

2002-2004: in dreams

for next album, in dreams, trevino wanted country record had latin flavor it. wrote or cowrote every song on album except final track, cover of bryan adams song have ever loved woman? title track, in dreams became single , remained on charts twenty weeks, falling shy of top 40 on billboard country charts (although reached peak of no. 34 on radio & records country charts). trevino disappointed final ranking, said album opened lot of doors me. made people take me little more bobbie ann mason.

2004-present: single releases , whole town blue

trevino s warner brothers single release, separate ways failed reach top 40 on billboard s hot country songs chart , planned release of whole town blue album cancelled. album subsequently released in 2011 on 1 cd previous album on warner label in dreams / whole town blue. christmas album titled oh ven, emanuel self-released in 2009 , still available through website of 2016.
