hennell born in ridley, kent in 1903, second son of rev. harold barclay hennell , ethel mary hennell. attended primary school in broadstairs , secondary school @ bradfield college, berkshire before studying art @ regent street polytechnic. hennell qualified teacher in 1928 , taught years @ kingswood school, bath , @ king s school, bruton in somerset. whilst @ college hennell had begun travelling around british countryside work on essays , illustrations of rural landscapes. suffered nervous breakdown 1932–35 , detained @ maudsley hospital. when recovered returned work of recording scenes of rural crafts , craftsmen @ work. worked closely h j massingham, illustrating books him , others. edward bawden, fellow artist, encouraged hennell write witnesses, account of mental illness.
