in 1871 speedy sailed straits settlements in malaya , became superintendent of police on island of penang. resigned in 1873 raise , command body of indian troops restore order in larut, malayan mining district, mentri (chief minister) ngah ibrahim.


in 1874 speedy appointed assistant british resident of larut , established , named malaysia’s oldest town, ‘thaipeng’, meaning ‘heavenly peace’. remained there until 1877.


the following year, major , mrs speedy spent several months exploring sudan; wife published book travels.


in 1883-85 speedy took part in mission led vice-admiral sir william hewett court of emperor yohannes iv of ethiopia negotiate region s disputed borders. returned ethiopia in 1897, part of rennell rodd, 1st baron rennell s mission court of king menelik negotiate anglo-ethiopian treaty, defined border sudan.
