in 1871 speedy sailed straits settlements in malaya , became superintendent of police on island of penang. resigned in 1873 raise , command body of indian troops restore order in larut, malayan mining district, mentri (chief minister) ngah ibrahim.


in 1874 speedy appointed assistant british resident of larut , established , named malaysia’s oldest town, ‘thaipeng’, meaning ‘heavenly peace’. remained there until 1877.


the following year, major , mrs speedy spent several months exploring sudan; wife published book travels.
