in september 2000, yakubu featured in nigeria s squad football @ 2000 summer olympics in australia. nigeria holders tournament. of maccabi haifa, 17-year-old yakubu wore number 9 shirt. scored injury-time equaliser in nigeria s first match, 3–3 draw honduras on 13 september in adelaide. played against hosts australia on 16 september in sydney side won 3–2 did not play on 19 september drew italy in adelaide. featured in quarter-finals nigeria lost 4–1 chile in melbourne on 23 september.


2002 african cup of nations , 2002 fifa world cup

yakubu made full international debut on 22 april 2000 in 4–0 home win in lagos against eritrea in qualification 2002 african cup of nations. scored first international goal in away win against namibia on 16 june 2001 in same qualification campaign. on 1 july 2001, scored first international brace, second , fourth goals in 4–0 away win on sudan in 2002 fifa world cup qualification stage. named in squad 2002 africa cup of nations in mali , given number 8 shirt manager shuaibu amodu. on 9 february 2002, yakubu scored goal of third-place play-off against mali after 29 minutes. however, yakubu not named later in year in squad selected new manager festus onigbinde 2002 world cup in japan , south korea.


2004 african cup of nations
