prior white settlement area inhabited gundungara people. first europeans known in area exploratory party of surveyor james meehan camped 1 km south of present-day grabben gullen (12 km south-west of crookwell). john oxley passed north , east later same year. crookwell known kiama . area around crookwell first settled in 1820s, , had received current name 1860s. after this, selection of blocks occurred; , population of on 100 midway through decade. first allotments sold @ end of decade. mid-1870s population had reached 1000 people.
