history
early history

the company founded in 1902 norddeutsche maschinen- und armaturenfabrik gmbh, focusing on shipbuilding , naval engineering services. name changed in 1911 atlas werke ag, origin of modern-day name.


during first world war, atlas werke built u-boats imperial german navy.


after war, company shrank in size , began focus on civilian technology, due restrictions imposed treaty of versailles.


following nazi seizure of power, company grew become arms supplier kriegsmarine. atlas manufactured torpedoes, minesweepers , enigma machines, among other things.


after 1945

after end of second world war, atlas rebuilt. shipbuilding division , other business areas sold off, shifting focus solely marine , defence electronics.


starting in 1960s, company switched ownership several times, including several years spent subsidiary of friedrich krupp ag (after 1965) , bremer vulkan (1991). in 1992, atlas merged stn systemtechnik nord, large defence electronics supplier, stn atlas elektronik gmbh. 5 years later, in 1997, stn atlas taken on rheinmetall (51 %) , bae systems (49 %).


in 2003 stn altas split; rheinmetall acquired land systems business (rheinmetall defence electronics) , bae took control of naval business, keeping name atlas elektronik.

bae systems announced intended sell company in 2005. main bidders thyssenkrupp/eads, thales group , l-3 communications. on december 30 joint thyssenkrupp/eads bid, valued @ €145 million (£100m), named winner companies holding 51 % , 49% respectively.


the bid complicated requirement of german government approve sale acceptable. financial times described sale cut price because french company thales bid €300 million, blocked purchasing atlas on national security grounds.


airbus defence , space announcement sale remaining shares in atlas elektronik thyssenkrupp on 12 january 2017. merge of thyssenkrupp marine systems , atlas elektronik completed on 3 april 2017.
