khun chang, phlai kaeo (who later given title, khun phaen), , nang phim philalai (who later changes name wanthong) childhood friends in suphanburi. khun phaen handsome , intelligent, poor because king has executed father , seized property. enters monkhood novice educated, excelling @ military skills , love magic. khun chang ugly , stupid, rich , well-connected @ ayutthaya court.

phim (now wanthong) resists khun chang s advance. when phlai kaeo (now khun phaen) returns war wife, have jealous quarrel. wanthong goes live khun chang, enjoying devotion , comforts afforded wealth.


when khun phaen s second wife, laothong, taken palace king, khun phaen regrets abandoning wanthong. breaks khun chang s house @ dead of night , takes wanthong away. @ first reluctant leave comfortable life, passion rekindles, , flee idyllic frugal sojourn in forest.


khun chang, furious elopement, tries frame khun phaen on ground of treason. tells king khun phaen mounting rebellion. king sends army khun phaen defeats, killing 2 of officers. warrant issued arrest. when wanthong becomes pregnant, khun phaen decides leave forest , give himself up. @ court trial scene, charges of rebellion disproved. khun phaen aquitted , khun chang heavily fined.


khun phaen nevertheless angers king asking release of laothong. jailed, , festers in prison around twelve years. khun chang abducts wanthong , again live in suphanburi. wanthong gives birth phlai ngam, son khun phaen. when phlai ngam eight, khun chang tries kill him. phlai ngam escapes live in kanchanaburi grandmother teaches him khun phaen s library.

when kings of ayutthaya , chiang mai quarrel on beautiful daughter of king of vientiane, phlai ngam volunteers lead army chiang mai, , petitions khun phaen s release. capture king of chiang mai, , return vientiane princess , great haul of booty. khun phaen gains status governor of kanchanaburi. phlai ngam appointed phra wai, officer in royal pages.


khun chang gets drunk @ phra wai s wedding, , old rivalry returns. phra wai abducts wanthong khun chang s house, prompting khun chang petition king redress. @ subsequent trial, king demands wanthong decide between khun chang , khun phaen. cannot, , dumb-struck. king orders execution. phra wai pleads king reprieve, order arrives fractionally late avoid execution.
