the tmd-b developed before start of second world war , wooden box filled explosives, there 3 raised boards on top of box, central 1 being hinged. central hinged board locked place strip of wood inserted groove runs along edge of 3 boards. when enough pressure applied top of mine boards collapse onto plunger of mv-5 detonator, triggering mine. fabric carrying handle typically fixed 1 side of mine. painted olive green, gray or white.


one problem mine when got wet hinged board tend swell making difficult disarm mine, issue addressed in tmd-44 mine.


the mine has been copied number of other countries, including chinese model 1951, north korean atm-72, , yugoslavian tdm-1 , tmd-2.
