lee son of thomas lee of barnstaple in north devon , brother of thomas lee (jnr), architect.


frederick enrolled student @ royal academy on 16 january 1818, aged nineteen. although no dated paintings recorded time, time of election associate of royal academy (a.r.a.) on 3 november 1834, @ least 6 dated paintings existed. 1 of f.r. lee s paintings time bringing in stag, oil, measuring 38 cm x 51 cm (1830) @ tate gallery in london).


lee elected full membership of royal academy on 10 february 1838. further 7 paintings have been documented painted lee before date, again oils, on canvas. tate gallery has example period of career in sea coast sunrise, painted in oil , 85 cm x 109 cm (1834). known have produced further forty dated paintings on next thirty years. in addition dated paintings, fifty undated paintings exist, including lake in park.


lee had house @ pilton, near barnstaple, being life devoted sea, lived great deal on board yacht, in visited coasts of france, spain, , italy. exhibited last time in 1870, , became honorary retired academician in following year.


lee died @ vleesch bank, herman station, in division of malmsay, south africa, of family living, on 5 june 1879.
