the guaratuba name means many guarás . name conceived natives inhabited region @ time of discovery of brazil portuguese people. guará name of bird of red plumage existed in abundance in area , though protected authorities, became extinct. tuba means extreme amount in aboriginal language.


the municipality contains 67% of 199,587 hectares (493,190 acres) guaratuba environmental protection area, created in 1992. contains 6,052 hectares (14,950 acres) boguaçu state park, created in 1998. contains 67% of 49,287 hectares (121,790 acres) guaricana national park, created in 2014 protect mountainous area of atlantic forest.


it contains lagoa parado municipal nature park, protects area of marshland rich in biodiversity.
