the grand cities mall, called south forks plaza, built in several stages. 1 of original anchors, kmart, first opened february 26, 1964, before rest of mall, continued built on summer. sears opened location in mall on october 8, 1964.

the mall first enclosed mall in city of grand forks. however, until 1973, mall s 2 wings not accessible each other inside. sears , many of stores occupied 1 wing, kmart , remainder of stores in other. in november 1973 connecting portion of mall completed, allowing access between wings. further addition added on west side in 1977.

the property acquired j. herzog & sons, inc. in 1998. old south forks plaza name subsequently dropped , renovations took place. same year, j. herzog , sons sold portion of mall, pavilion, hope evangelical covenant church.

in 2000, sears left mall , moved columbia mall. empty sears space divided several smaller stores including zimmerman s furniture store , family dollar. in 2005, burggraf s ace hardware opened store on east side of mall.

on april 1, 2015, entire mall purchased hope evangelical covenant church. separate company, land of hope, llc, created run mall s daily operations.

the grand cities mall contains tenants not located in shopping malls: dance studio, cake bakery, , local motor vehicle department office.
