he made several attempts run away home, succeeding, @ age fourteen, hiring on cabin boy , cook on fishing schooner, returned home. in 1860, after birth of eleventh slocombe (joshua changed spelling of last name later in life) child , subsequent death of kindly mother, joshua, sixteen, left home good. , friend signed on @ halifax ordinary seamen on merchant ship bound dublin, ireland.
