the original settlement became town of philippi on section of bottomland @ bend in river @ mouth of anglin s run. (this area later designated dayton park .) opposite bottomland, @ western landing of booth s ferry , sharp ridge breaks abruptly down river , still known nobusiness hill . of town located in bottomland, portion, including university campus, on ridge — battle hill — overlooking valley northwest.
a railroad line runs through philippi, used freight trains, passenger rail service having been discontinued in 1956. (the passenger station museum.) town served small, private philippi-barbour county regional airport.
