the making of first championship

manager charlie comiskey able assemble , direct team start finish way wanted. result: runaway championship.


the team built on daring baserunning, clutch hitting, , best pitching in league. team whole led league in both earned run average , overall runs allowed healthy margin on second-best louisville. individually, dave foutz outstanding, won 33 of 46 games started , ranked fifth in era. teammate bob caruthers better, compiling league-leading totals in wins (40), era (2.07) , winning percentage (a stellar .755).


running away pack

the browns took on first place stay in second week of may, made joke of race in july. on successive home stands, had winning streaks of 17 , 10 games, combining major-league record 27-game winning streak @ home still stands best ever. finished 16 laps ahead of second-place cincinnati red stockings , earned berth in world series against national league champion chicago white stockings.


the championship

game 1 between browns , white stockings called darkness tied 5–5 after 8 innings. series turned game 2 in st. louis. chicago leading 5–4 in sixth inning when comiskey pulled team off field in protest of work of umpire dave sullivan. sullivan later forfeited game chicago.


after foutz pitched st. louis 13–4 victory, however, anson reneged, , baseball world called series draw.
