originally, cherokee county more territory county, covering northwest of chattahoochee river , chestatee river except carroll county. county created december 26, 1831 state legislature. named after cherokee indians lived in area @ time. several other counties carved out of these cherokee lands part of cherokee land lottery of 1832.

an act of georgia general assembly passed on december 3 of year created counties of forsyth, lumpkin, union, cobb, gilmer, murray, cass (now bartow), floyd, , paulding. forcible (sometimes @ gunpoint) removal of cherokee people, leading notorious trail of tears indian territory west of mississippi river, began in area year before. push european americans expel cherokee accelerated discovery of gold in local streams.


county courts authorized meet @ home of ambrose harnage. settlement became known harnageville, later called marble works, , later tate, when cherokee county first established. since 1880 town has been called tate, , (since 1853) in pickens county. part of county taken directly cherokee, other via gilmer county (itself earlier taken cherokee).


etowah named first county seat in 1833. name later changed canton.


remaining county

in 1857, part of southeastern corner of county ceded general assembly form milton county (now city of milton in county of fulton). in 1890s, atlanta & knoxville railroad (later renamed marietta & north georgia railroad when not completed knoxville) built branch line through middle of county. when line bought louisville & nashville railroad following decade, l&n built railroad stations @ woodstock , other towns.
