overview

paschim medinipur, located in south-western part of west bengal, created partition of erstwhile midnapore district, largest district of india, on 1 january 2002. ranks second in terms of geographical area (9,295.28  km) amongst districts of state, next south 24-parganas (9,960  km). ranks third in terms of rural population (4.58 million) following south 24-parganas (5.82 million) , murshidabad (5.13 million). ranked fourth in terms of percentage of tribal population (14.87) following jalpaiguri (18.87), purulia (18.27) , dakshin dinajpur (16.12) in 2011.


broadly speaking, there 2 natural divisions of district. nh 14 , nh 16 (old numbering nh 60) bankura balasore, cuts across district , dividing line between 2 natural divisions. east of road, soil fertile alluvial , area flat. west, chota nagpur plateau gradually slopes down creating undulating area infertile laterite rocks , soil. landscape changes dense dry deciduous forests in west marshy wetlands in east.


the alluvial portion may further subdivided 2 divisions. first, strip of purely deltaic country nearer hooghly , rupnarayan, intersected numerous rivers , watercourses subject tidal influences. second, rest of eastern half of district. monotonous rice plain numerous waterways , tidal creeks intersecting it. tidal creeks lined embankments prevent flooding of fields. of area water-logged.

paschim medinipur district subject both floods , drought. ghatal , parts of kharagpur subdivision covering area of 142,647 hectares (1,426.47 km) flood prone. water logging during rainy season affects ghatal , southern parts of kharagpur subdivion , results in loss of crops in such areas sabang, pingla , narayangarh cd blocks.335,248 hectares (3,352.48 km) in jhargram , medinipur sadar subdivisions drought prone. drought situation particularly severe in jhargram subdivision. although district away sea, cyclones hit in october–november.

midnapore district headquarters. other important towns , cities in district include: kharagpur, ghatal, belda, chandrakona, ramjibanpur, garbeta, balichak, dantan, mohanpur, keshiari, keshpur, narayangarh, sabang, daspur.mohanpur.


villages
