history
the official beginning (1960s – 1970s)-

the chantilly/tiffany breed had official beginning “foreign longhair”. in 1967 jennie robinson (neotype cattery) of new york. purchased pair of semi-foreign longhaired chocolate cats golden eyes in white plains, new york. may have had same parents not litter-mates. “thomas” year of age upon purchase, , “shirley,” around 6 months.

shirley’s first litter of 6 kittens born in 1969. looked had been cut cookie cutter. chocolate color , shared similar appearance. robinson initiated breeding program emphasize these traits. in 1970s, aca registered thomas , shirley, along many of descendants “foreign-longhairs.”

the passing of torch (1970s – 1980s)-

robinson ended breeding program in 1970s. sigyn lund (sig tim hil cattery) florida burmese breeder, purchased of ms. robinson’s kittens , took on “foreign longhair” breeding program. new york origin not known public @ time. because of lund’s reputation burmese breeder, has been speculated chantilly long haired burmese. change in breed’s name requested judges, because felt breed’s current name “foreign longhair” general, name “mahogany” suggested. ms. lund changed breed-name “foreign-longhair” “tiffany” (a name representing elegance , class). lund promoted breed under “tiffany”. aca dropped “tiffany” recognition, reason being rarity. result, breed representatives registered under lund (sig tim hil cattery) name became unregistered , lost pedigree status. after event, breed continued advertised “burmese.” @ 1 point, in informal phone interview, sig tim hil cattery supplied information researcher joan bernstein regarding these chocolate cats. interview resulted in publication of information, again suggesting possibility product of uk crosses between burmese , himalayans (a persian cross). information posted in harper s illustrated handbook of cats . “the ultimate cat book” david taylor in 1989, tiffany’s history described “produced crossing burmese cats persians”. false advertisement , phone interview explain tie burmese in these books. confusion lead breed near extinction.

chantillys , canadian/ american teamwork (1980s - 1990s)-

around same time robinson , lund developing “tiffany” in united states, canadian acreage owner surprised cat appeared @ home in 1973. long-haired, semi-foreign chocolate, gold-eyed feline of unknown ancestry gave birth litter of kittens. once again these kittens carbon copies of mother. experience shared robinson cats in breeding program. offspring of these rescued canadian breeders in order re-establish “tiffany” breed in north america cooperative effort robinson , lund.

one major advocate of chantilly tracy oraas began involvement breed in 1988, when responded classified ad advertising “chocolate kittens”. tracy oraas got in touch siamese oriental breeder jan deregt. oraas , deregt undertook efforts reestablish breed after consulting tica judge. judge expressed nothing on show bench compared them. took major detective work, including calls every veterinarian in florida, managed contact tiffany’s original breeders, jennie robinson , sigyn lund. oraas , deregt concluded burmese never used in tiffany breeding program. research did reveal english breeders had crossed foreign longhairs (in attempt recreate angora-type cat. suspect tiffany may have been product of these efforts. since none of original chantilly’s found, established using registered european angoras, havana browns, , abyssinians, , nebelungs.

in 1992, oraas asked rename breed because of possible confusion british tiffanie. wishing preserve elegance tiffany name represented, chose “chantilly”.

the disappearance, , last chantilly cattery (1990s – 2000s)-

tracy oraas bred “chantilly/tiffany” 2000s, seemed have faded breeding scene. in 2001, there few catteries working chantilly: 1 in germany, 1 in canada, 1 in washington state, 1 in west virginia, , 1 in southern illinois known amorino cattery. anne davenport-parini started amorino cattery in 2001 when brought nugget (also known ltd or little tabby dude) of emberhearth cattery home illinois. 2003, amorino chantilly cattery in still operating. last known chantilly breeder in usa. ltd produced many beautiful kittens before retirement.

the last known chantillys, devastating fire, , extinction (2000s - 2010s)-

in 2012, devastating fire destroyed amorino cattery , archives. fall of armino cattery, breed facing extinction. last “chantillys” known in usa frosty (grandson of ltd) , daughter acey. frosty shipped nebelung breeder in norway (cacao criadero cattery). there struggle frosty breed nebelung female, exact reason struggle unknown. 1 kitten, acey, produced in efforts. in 2015, norwegian breeder gave on chantilly breeding program after death of frosty, , fixed female acey. result of event, far it known, chantilly considered extinct. however, little chocolate cats on farm somewhere in canada brought breed back, , saved extinction last time, perhaps history repeat itself.
