the birth of 97x



in 1981 station purchased doug , linda balogh $375,000. after station adopted moniker 97x. based on feedback focus groups of college students, station switched modern rock format in september 1983, reportedly sixth modern rock station in country. station benefited large youthful audience @ adjacent miami university listeners in urban , suburban areas of cincinnati , dayton, majority of broadcast area rural.


woxy s tagline, 97x, bam! future of rock , roll, quoted dustin hoffman s character raymond babbitt in 1988 film rain man.


in 1988, cincinnati magazine named 97x best cutting edge radio station in cincinnati area. woxy placed in rolling stone reader s poll best radio station category 4 times between 1990 , 1995. rolling stone recognized woxy 1 of ten stations don t suck in 1998 , 1 of 4 last great independent radio stations in 2003.


webcast (1998–2010)

in 1998, woxy began experiment webcasts, , listeners tuned in around world; internet listenership continued grow. station continued broadcast online while building website message boards , information create community of modern rock. station 1 of number of stations offered in internet radio section of itunes.

in january 2004, baloghs sold license 97.7 fm dallas, texas-based first broadcasting investment partners $5.6 million retained station s music library , 97x brand intention of continuing broadcasting internet-only woxy.com. 97x ended terrestrial broadcasting on 97.7 fm on may 13, 2004.
