First World War and abdication Ferdinand I of Bulgaria

on 11 october 1915, bulgarian army attacked serbia after signing treaty austria-hungary , germany stating bulgaria gain territory sought @ expense of serbia. ferdinand not admirer of german emperor wilhelm ii (his second cousin once removed) or austrian emperor franz josef whom described idiot, old dotard of francis joseph . however, ferdinand wanted additional territorial gains after humiliation of balkan wars. entailed forming alliance former enemy, ottoman empire.


during initial phase of world war i, kingdom of bulgaria achieved several decisive victories on enemies , laid claim disputed territories of macedonia after serbia s defeat. next 2 years, bulgarian army shifted focus towards repelling allied advances nearby greece. partially involved in 1916 conquest of neighboring romania, ruled ferdinand i, ferdinand s second cousin once removed.


to save bulgarian throne, tsar ferdinand abdicated in favour of eldest son, became tsar boris iii on 3 october 1918. under new leadership, bulgaria surrendered allies and, consequence, lost not additional territory had fought in major conflict, territory had won after balkan wars giving access aegean sea.
