the modern enclosed deer park @ northern end of great park. home large herd of semi-wild deer, reflecting original medieval purpose of park.


the copper horse

the long walk runs south windsor castle 1829 copper horse statue of king george iii atop snow hill there impressive views of castle. 2.65 miles (4.26 km) george iv gateway @ windsor castle copper horse. other equestrian statues in park include 1 of prince consort, west of polo grounds, , 1 of queen elizabeth ii near village.


the royal lodge

the royal lodge built in centre of park deputy ranger s house. made retreat prince regent 1812, largely pulled down after death. remains renovated, in 1930s, home duke , duchess of york before accession george vi , queen elizabeth. official residence of prince andrew, duke of york , not accessible public.


the royal chapel of saints

the royal chapel of saints built after chapels of royal , cumberland lodges proved small growing numbers of household staff. chapel built in 1825 jeffry wyattville , regularly used george iv during refurbishment of windsor castle. later remodelled in gothic revival style samuel sanders teulon , anthony salvin. queen victoria attended chapel did duke , duchess of york before accession george vi , queen elizabeth.


cumberland lodge

other notable buildings in park include cumberland lodge, built in 1652 during commonwealth. after restoration of monarchy in 1660 lodge became home of ranger of great park, office in gift of sovereign. each ranger made – or in 1 case, of sarah churchill, duchess of marlborough, – own mark on features of house , surroundings.


throughout life queen victoria frequent visitor. daughter princess helena of united kingdom lived @ lodge on fifty years, presiding on elaborate re-building after bad fire in 1869 , extensive alterations in 1912. lord fitzalan, last british viceroy of ireland, last private person entrusted lodge. in time, in 1936, prime minister, stanley baldwin, discussed crisis on king edward viii s desire marry wallis simpson, talks led abdication of crown few weeks later. in 1947, king made lodge available newly established st. catharine s foundation, later known king george vi , queen elizabeth foundation of st catharine s. today organisation known cumberland lodge. cumberland lodge today educational charity dedicated initiating fresh debate on burning questions facing society. grounds not open public, house continually holding conferences, open days , lectures.


cranbourne tower

the private cranbourne tower viewed surrounding paths. survives of cranbourne lodge, residence of keeper of cranbourne chase. thought date 16th century.



the valley gardens overlooking virginia water lake


savill garden

in south-east of park, near englefield green, well-endowed savill garden , valley gardens designed , built eric savill in 1930s , 1940s. include extraordinary range of flowers , trees around world. smith s lawn , polo grounds nearby. gardens open visitors between 10:00 , 16:30 in winter , 10:00 , 18:00 in summer.


virginia water lake

virginia water lake, in south of park, artificially-created lake of around 1 km (0.4 sq mi) dating 1740s. among lakeside features 30-metre-high (100 ft) high canadian totem pole commemorating centenary of british columbia , collection of ornamental roman ruins, transported site of leptis magna (modern-day al-khums) in 1816 , installed @ virginia water in 1826.
