biography
early career

espada began professional boxing career on march 11, 1967, defeat @ hands of future antonio cervantes world title challenger josue marquez, on six-round decision, @ san juan. next 2 fights declared draws (ties). both against luis vinales.


after defeat , draw (both against chris fernandez), espada got first win. on april 1, 1968, knocked out linfer contreras in first round in san juan. after 1 more win, fought outside puerto rico first time, losing on points after 6 rounds future roberto durán world title challenger jimmy robertson, on september 27, 1969, @ los angeles, california.


his next fight against bobby joe hughes, april 9, 1969 in san juan. hughes disqualified using illegal tactics during fight, , victory marked beginning of fifteen fight winning streak espada. on november 7 of 1970, streak stopped matt donovan, beat him on points on ten rounds. shortly after, espada beat former emile griffith world title challenger manuel gonzalez , lose former world champion eddie perkins, both times, on points after ten rounds.


between 1972 , 1975, espada posted twelve wins in row, including victory on perennial world title challenger armando muniz, , win in panama. beaten luis acosta in caracas decision in ten rounds stop winning streak, avenged defeat against acosta ten-round win on him in rematch held in san juan.

espada became world champion in situation described bizarre: undisputed world welterweight champion of era, josé nápoles, fight carlos monzón world s middleweight title. wbc kept recognizing nápoles world welterweight champion, wba, feeling espada deserved chance @ nápoles crown, decided strip nápoles of world championship because nápoles went ahead planned , fought monzon. thus, on june 28, 1975, espada became wba s world welterweight champion, , puerto rico s fourth world boxing champion in history, outpointing known canadian, clyde gray, on fifteen rounds in san juan.


he retained title fifteen-round decision on johnny gant, , eighth-round knockout on alfonzo hayman.


on july 11, 1976, espada fought have been start of mexican boxing tour. espada, looking forward meeting miguel campanino, instead faced boxer had record of 16-5 , named josé cuevas. cuevas lifted wba world welterweight title away espada second-round knockout. fight again twice, cuevas retaining title ten , eleven-round knockouts.

towards end of career, espada, realizing best days boxer had passed him by, announced on vea magazine putting salsa orchestra. cholo espada orchestra had success in puerto rico, appearing on television shows during late 1970s , 1980s.


espada lost last important fight, against thomas hearns, knockout in round 4 @ joe louis arena, in detroit, on march 2 of 1980. retired short period of time. espada wanted retire winner, however, and, after 1 year of inactivity, made 1 fight comeback, knocking out julio alfonso in 4 rounds, on december 10, 1981, in san juan.


after retiring boxing, espada became boxing trainer, , has remained in position ever since. espada had record of 44 wins, 11 losses , 3 draws, 27 wins knockout.
