following path of grandfather vic richardson, radio commentator many years, chappell entered media in 1973 writing ghosted magazine articles , column age. did television commentary 0–10 network , bbc before playing wsc. during 1980s, chappell spent 8 years co-hosting mike gibson, wide world of sports, innovative magazine-style program broadcast channel 9 on saturday afternoons , co-hosted sister show, sports sunday, 5 years. in stint on former program, swore without realising live air. similar incident occurred during live telecast of 1993 ashes series. channel 9 suspended him on both occasions.

allan border & bob simpson

chappell had direct influence on hughes successor, allan border. in captaincy tenure, border struggling burdens of position acb appointed bob simpson team coach assist. led animosity between chappell , simpson chappell derided need coach. simpson responded writing peer influence of older players helping younger players fell away during era when chappell brothers led team, , redressing problem.
