Life Sir Arthur Markham, 1st Baronet

markham born on 25 august 1866 @ brimington hall in brimington, near chesterfield. son of charles markham part owner of family coal mine, markham colliery, in chesterfield. on mother s side grandson of sir joseph paxton, designer of great exhibition s crystal palace. educated @ rugby school. in 1898 married lucy bertram cunningham (c.1873–4 february 1960).


markham served 1900 1916 served liberal m.p. mansfield division of nottinghamshire. created baronet, markham of beachborough park, newington, kent, on 10 july 1911. districts of beachborough , newington eclipsed eurotunnel terminus on outskirts of folkestone. arthur markham s technical skill, commercial insight , courage helped development of considerable parts of english , welsh coalfields. managed , owned number of other coalmines, , there many villages, businesses, streets , areas in wales, derbyshire , south yorkshire bearing name markham. brother charles paxton markham owner of markham & co. engineering of chesterfield. firm 1 of largest suppliers of coal mine winders. brother director of staveley coal , iron company.


during first world war, markham , wife made house near folkestone available government accommodation of overseas officers , purchased , sent aid packages british prisoners of war in german hands. lady markham nursed. markham fought tirelessly against recruitment of under age soldiers british army during war, , ultimately, these efforts contributed untimely death @ age of 50.


markham died of heart attack on 5 august 1916 @ newstead abbey near mansfield.
