prior construction of china s national railway network, yangtze , hanshui rivers had been main transportation arteries of hubei many centuries, , still continue play important transport role.


historically, hubei s overland transport network hampered lack of bridges across yangtze river, divides province northern , southern regions. first bridge across yangtze in hubei, wuhan yangtze river bridge completed in 1957, followed zhicheng bridge in 1971. of october 2014, hubei had 23 bridges , tunnels across yangtze river, including 9 bridges , 3 tunnels in wuhan.

the railway beijing reached wuhan in 1905, , later extended guangzhou, becoming first north-to-south railway mainline cross china. number of other lines crossed province later on, including jiaozuo-liuzhou railway , beijing-kowloon railway, respectively, in western , eastern part of province.


the first decade of 21st century has seen large number of new railway construction in hubei. wuhan–guangzhou high-speed railway, parallel original wuhan-guangzhou line, opened in late 2009, , being extended north, towards beijing. new east-west high-speed corridor connecting major cities along yangtze (the huhanrong passenger dedicated line) being constructed well: hefei-wuhan section, opened in 2009, has enabled fast service between wuhan , shanghai, while wuhan-yuchang , yichang-wanzhou sections (as of 2010) under construction.

hubei s main airport wuhan tianhe international airport. yichang sanxia airport serves 3 gorges region. there passenger airports in xiangyang, enshi, , jingzhou (shashi airport, named after city s shashi district).
