after being close omission previous season, waugh made start 2000–01 season, scoring 119 against west indies in second test in perth. added 2 further half-centuries total 339 runs @ 48.4 windies defeated 5–0. productive summer continued in limited-overs format when went on score australian odi record of 173 in second tri-series final against west indies @ melbourne cricket ground. 1 of 3 odi centuries scored in tournament, others being 112 , 102, both not out, against west indies , zimbabwe respectively. in total scored 540 runs in series @ average of 108.00. leading run-scorer far in tournament, expected named player of series, resulting in widespread crowd jeering when instead awarded brian lara. waugh tipped win allan border medal due prolific runscoring year. however, despite leading player votes 32, umpire , media thought otherwise, awarding steve waugh 37 votes 32, making steve winner 65–64.


the 2001 tour of india saw australia s 16 test winning streak come end when india claimed series 2–1. waugh scored 70 , 57 in third test in chennai finish 149 runs @ 29.80 in difficult series. waugh continued fine odi form century, unbeaten 133 against india in second odi, forced return home after finger fractured javagal srinath delivery.
