he brought ctu on day 1 when (then senator) david palmer attempted visit jack bauer confront him failed assassination attempt. chappelle, however, had bauer isolated after being asked secret service, plus had go under investigation. after trying bauer jailed, chappelle received direct orders washington d.c. (via palmer s acquaintance alan optican pentagon), , accepted reinstatement of bauer until end of day. chappelle known because of harsh determination follow book , gaining him enemies @ ctu when jack detained , agents (particularly tony almeida) had break protocol allow jack move on , foil assassination attempt. after that, chappelle left ctu. appears in 3 episodes season.

24: season 2

in day 2, chappelle again came division ctu when current director of ctu, george mason, died in line of duty, leaving command of los angeles unit tony almeida. bauer had gone rogue after finding out possibility recorded audio incriminating 3 middle east countries in nuclear explosion in american soil faked. chappelle had orders direct of ctu s resources plan military response against 3 countries, leaving bauer alone. trying bauer, almeida had no choice other disable chappelle having michelle dessler meet him @ holding room, claiming there wrong rudin. rudin not in room , tony drugged him. however, michelle s rival, carrie turner, caught on out of ordinary going on , reported suspicions deputy director brad hammond. hammond realized wrong when unable contact chappelle.

after asking tony almeida chappelle s whereabouts several times, hammond came ctu own officers , took on operations. hammond had chappelle rescued , both almeida , dessler arrested. eventually, chappelle received orders recover jack bauer discovered lead real. thus, had trust almeida, traded information jack s whereabouts written pardon both himself , michelle dessler. in last few minutes of day chappelle expresses condolences loss of george mason had sacrificed himself earlier. tony asks chappelle either fire him or out of chair. chappelle happily tells tony district director pleased actions. chappelle makes gesture, giving tony job , leaves ctu, leaving tony special agent in charge. appears in final 6 episodes of season.

24: season 3

in day 3, chappelle plays larger role in past , again called ctu when tony almeida shot in neck , unable run ctu. chappelle attempted capture jack bauer before deliver escaped ramon salazar northern mexico. later revealed part of plan recover deadly virus.

chappelle put in operation supervisor , removed chloe o brian, had reinstate temporarily when computer virus planted nina myers , unwittingly activated jack bauer threatened shut down ctu s firewalls. after that, chappelle followed lead of bank transaction reach bio-terrorist attack mastermind stephen saunders, holding government hostage threat of releasing deadly virus general population.

during time, michelle dessler placed unusual request chandler plaza hotel, saunders virus had been released. though hotel quarantined, vast majority of guests , workers not expected see next sunrise. michelle asked tony send on suicide pills, overdoses of tranquilizers made available virus victims if chose. chappelle intercepted tony , reminded him strictly against regulations, agreed (possibly first time) bend rules. (some victims did in fact choose use pills.)

saunders discovered chappelle s investigation , ordered president of united states, david palmer, arrange execution. palmer assigned jack task of executing chappelle. 2 waited @ train yard saunders had designated. chase edmunds led raid capture terrorist, discover targeted safehouse empty decoy. saunders men roll in black van, leaving bauer choice of either defying saunders or executing chappelle. deciding chappelle s life not worth possible consequences, jack asked him if there wanted call. ryan replied saying had no friends except people worked with, , hadn t spoken brother in years. chappelle asked jack let him die dignity allowing him take own life, unable so. jack said simply, m sorry let down, ryan. god forgive me. ryan chappelle killed gunshot wound of head @ 06:59:53 am. prior death in episode 18, absent 5 episodes. appears in 14 episodes overall, counting voice-over in episode 5 , corpse in episode 19. death honored silent clock.
