durio sensu lato has 30 recognised species. durio sensu stricto comprises 24 of these species. 6 additional species included in durio s.l. considered comprise own genus, boschia. durio s.s. , boschia have indistinguishable vegetative characteristics , many shared floral characteristics. crucial difference between 2 anther locules open apical pores in boschia , longitudinal slits in durio s.s. these 2 genera form clade sister genus in tribe durioneae, cullenia. these 3 genera form clade characterized highly modified (mono- , polythecate, opposed bithecate) anthers.


the genus durio placed taxonomists in family bombacaceae, or others in broadly defined malvaceae includes bombacaceae, , others in smaller family of 7 genera durionaceae.


durio included in bombacaceae because of presence of monothecate anthers, opposed bithecate anthers common rest of mallows (and angiosperms, in general). however, first studies examine mallow phylogeny using molecular data found tribe durioneae should placed in subfamily helicteroideae of expanded malvaceae. authors of these studies hypothesize monothecate anthers have evolved convergently in durioneae , in malvatheca clade (comprising malvaceae s.l. subfamilies malvoideae , bombacoideae).
