the somali plate formed between 60 million years ago , 10 million years ago rifting of african plate along east african rift. because east africa rift separates continent 2 plates, african plate west of rift referred nubian plate.


the somali plate bounded on west east african rift, stretches south triple junction in afar depression, undersea continuation of rift extending southward offshore. northern boundary aden ridge along coast of saudi arabia. eastern boundary central indian ridge, northern portion of known carlsberg ridge. southern boundary southwest indian ridge. dating of volcanism in comoro islands , northern madagascar volcanoes indicates rate of motion east on hotspot of approximately 45 mm/yr.
