in late march 2009, samoa s censorship board banned film distribution, without giving reason. samoan human rights activist ken moala disputed ban, commenting s harmless, don t know how affect samoan lifestyle. totally different , not applicable here, pretty tame really. pacific freedom forum issued press release stating samoa nation worldwide censors have banned multi-academy award winning film , limiting samoans smuggled or pirated versions. american samoan monica miller, forum s co-chair, stated, observers left wonder @ censorship standards being applied in country fa afafine have established , respected role. fa afafine biologically men raised assume female gender roles, making them third gender accepted in samoan society. fa afafine association criticised ban, describing reject[ion of] idea of homosexuality .


on april 30, principal censor leiataua niuapu released reason ban, saying film had been deemed inappropriate , contradictory christian beliefs , samoan culture : in movie trying promote human rights of gays. of scenes inappropriate in regard of sex in film itself, s contrary way of life here in samoa. samoan society is, in words of bbc, conservative , devoutly christian .
