facings

from establishment in 1685, regiment had red coat yellow facings. colour of cloth lining of coat, appeared in turned cuffs, skirts , lapels. later, uniform styles changed, became colour of collar , cuffs of jacket or tunic. royal warrant of 1751 first regulated facing colours of marching regiments of foot . of 13th foot, or lieutenant-general pulteney s regiment, given philemot yellow, description repeated in next clothing regulation of 1768. philemot corruption of french feuille morte or dead leaf , shade of yellow approximating of faded (autumn) leaf. when 13th foot given title prince albert s in 1842, became royal regiment, , facings changed dark blue. braid , lace worn on officers coats silver until 1830 , thereafter gold. had black line threaded through it.


sergeants sash

a distinction unique regiment warrant officers , sergeants wore sashes on left shoulder , tied on right side, in same manner officers. commemorated regiment s stand @ culloden, large number of officer casualties led sergeants taking command. authorised in 1865, although appears have been worn earlier without authority. in 1898, officers of regiments ordered wear sash knotted on left side, exception of somerset light infantry permitted continue knot on right.


light infantry distinctions

in 1822, regiment granted light infantry distinctions, survived in full dress of 1914 dark green home service helmet (instead of dark blue of line infantry) , bugle-horn incorporated in badge. forage cap , postwar no.1 dress uniform worn regiment dark green.


badges

the first distinctive badge awarded regiment sphinx service in egypt, authorised in 1802. 1814, stringed bugle-horn had been approved badge of light infantry , rifle regiments. when 13th foot converted light infantry in 1822, badge adopted shako head-dress bugle-horn strings numerals 13 in centre , surmounted sphinx . when new model of shako adopted in 1844, mural crown , scroll inscribed jellalabad added. similar devices used on plate of home service helmet adopted in 1878. in 1898, when khaki service dress introduced, metal badge designed new slouch hat. consisted of bugle surmounted mural crown above scroll inscribed jellalabad . cypher pa prince albert placed within strings of bugle horn. remained regiment s cap badge on various forms of head-dress until amalgamation.
